Communications & Devices
Wireless and optical technologies are the twin pillars within the Communications and Devices cluster. The groups in this cluster, namely the Radio Systems , Digital Wireless , Embedded Systems , Lightwave  and Networking  groups, focus their research on communication systems, protocols and algorithms, wireless networking, radio devices and optical networks.

The current research interests of the Radio Systems group are in very-high-data-rate ultra-wideband radio, antennas and advanced transceiver architectures. This is complemented by the Digital Wireless group's work in improving spectral efficiency, speed, range and reliability of wireless communications systems. The Embedded Systems group is engaged in the design and development of advanced mobile terminal devices that can truly and transparently integrate different wireless access modes as well as reconfigure themselves in real-time. Research in the Networking group is in the areas of next generation Internet protocols, ad-hoc networks, middleware, location systems and AAA frameworks. Finally, the Lightwave group is active in the areas of fibre-based components, optical networking and terabit optical systems.

The research groups in the Communications and Devices cluster share a unifying theme to deliver solutions for mobile, broadband and end-to-end multimedia communication applications based on converged Internet Protocol technologies. Together, the groups aim to discover solutions to many of the research problems in networking protocols that will connect billions of people and devices, many on the move, and provide them with the desired quality of service.
