General
and Specific Objectives
The general
objective of CNRE is to provide an institutional infrastructure and
capacity for research, training and consultancy in natural resources
and the environment for poverty reduction at household and national
levels. Specifically, its objectives are to:
i. Establish
a centre of excellence for research and development (R&D) in sustainable
utilization of natural resources and sound environmental management
ii. encourage and conduct research in the areas of natural resources
and environmental management;
iii. carry out research in biotechnology in areas of food and health
sciences;
iv. coordinate research activities and provide information to researchers
on priority areas of natural resources and environmental management;
v. introduce and strengthen postgraduate training (including through
distance learning) and demand driven courses in natural resources
and environmental management;
vi. review national policies/laws and international conventions/protocols
related to natural resources and environment including climate change;
vii. undertake consultancies in natural resources, sustainable livelihoods,
food security and environment, and
viii. disseminate scientific research findings to appropriate target
groups through publications, seminars, workshops, courses and conferences.
Expected
Outputs and Outcomes
The major outputs and outcomes will include:
* a centre
of excellence for research and development in natural resources and
environment;
* a programme for monitoring and assessment of anthropogenic sources
of pollution and their effect on biodiversity and environment including
climate change;
* environmental monitoring and evaluation (M & E) tools including
industrial audits and EIAs;
* policy options for sustainable utilization of natural resources
and environmental management;
* predictive models for environmental degradation and sustainable
utilization of natural resources;
* technologies for sustainable utilization of natural resources including
plants, animals, water and soils;
* enhanced capacity/skills of development partners including NGOs
and communities for sustainable utilization and management of natural
resources;
* increased awareness of partners and decision and policy makers on
the critical role of sustainable utilization of natural resources
and the environment, and
* strong and effective multidisciplinary teams involving partners
for research and development.
